Cigarette Smoke May Increase Microbial Virulence
نویسنده
چکیده
Cigarette smoke has long been known to aggravate respiratory infections. A new study expands the potential health effects to a new front, showing that acute in vitro exposure of Staphylococcus aureus to cigarette smoke promoted biofilm formation and adhesion to human cells. The active agents behind this boost in activity appeared to be reactive oxygen species (such as hydrogen per oxide), which are linked not just to cigarette smoke but also vehicular exhaust and biomass smoke.

Effects of cigarette smoke condensate on pneumococcal biofilm formation and pneumolysin.
Although the well-recognised predisposition of cigarette smokers to the development of severe pneumococcal disease may be attributable to impairment of local host defences, less is known about the direct effects of smoke exposure on airway pathogens, or their virulence factors. In the current study, we have investigated the effects of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on biofilm formation by Str...

Cigarette smoke contains around 4000 chemical substances including free radicals and carcinogens, which are xenobiotic agents in the body, affecting the reproductive system. Purple sweet potatoes contain the color pigment anthocyanin. The purple color pigment (anthocyanin) in purple sweet potatoes is a beneficial antioxidant because it can react with free radicals that can cause damage in the b...
متن کاملEffects of Electronic (e)-Cigarette Vapor on Staphylococcal Virulence: Are E-Cigarettes Safer than Conventional Cigarettes?
In recent years, electronic (e)‐cigarettes have dramatically increased in popularity as an alternative to conventional cigarettes. Little is known about the effects of e‐cigarette vapor (EV) on bacteria that colonize the nasopharynx, including methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). As most cases of pneumonia can be traced to bacteria in a patient's nasopharynx, increased virulence ...
متن کاملEffects of Cigarette Smoke, Alcohol, Vitamin E and Vitamin C on Oral Mucosa and Salivary Peroxides Enzyme in Rats
Introduction: According to studies, high intake of fruits and vegetables are associated with reduced cancer incidence and mortality. The high levels of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables are believed to contribute in cancer prevention, possibly by inhibiting oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of cigarette smoke, alcohol and vitamin E and vitamin C on oral mucosa an...

The present study is premeditated to extenuate the role of Ficus virens extract and itsbioactive compound on cigarette smoke, an important risk factor for CVD, induced oxidativestress and hyperlipidemia. Cigarette smoke (CS) exposure to rats results in significant loss ofbody weight and increases blood carbon monoxide saturation (carboxyhemoglobin), nicotine, plasma TC, TG, and LDL-C levels but ...
